Steamed Broccoli with Lemon Butter Sauce

Steamed Broccoli with Lemon Butter Sauce

Transform simple steamed broccoli into a vibrant and flavorful side dish with this incredibly easy recipe. The key is to steam the broccoli just until it's tender-crisp, preserving its beautiful green color and satisfying crunch. This method ensures the broccoli is perfectly cooked without becoming mushy.

The simple sauce, made from melted butter, fresh lemon juice, and a hint of zest, coats each floret, adding a rich and tangy flavour that complements the earthy taste of the broccoli. It's a versatile side that pairs wonderfully with chicken, fish, or steak, making it a go-to for any weeknight meal.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt or to taste
  • 3 tablespoons Unsalted butter cubed
  • 1 large head Broccoli cut into bite-sized florets
  • 1 inch Water for steaming
  • 1 Lemon zested and juiced
  • a pinch Black Pepper freshly ground, to taste

Method

5m10m15m
  1. Prepare the broccoli by washing it and cutting it into evenly sized florets.
  2. Place about an inch of water in a medium-sized pot. Insert a steamer basket and bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat.
  3. Add the broccoli florets to the steamer basket, cover the pot, and steam for 5-7 minutes, or until the broccoli is tender-crisp.
  4. While the broccoli is steaming, melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat.
  5. Once the butter is melted, remove it from the heat and stir in the juice and zest of one lemon. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Carefully remove the steamed broccoli from the pot and transfer it to a serving bowl. Pour the lemon butter sauce over the top and toss gently to coat.
  7. Serve immediately.

Notes

For the best texture, be careful not to overcook the broccoli. It should be bright green and easily pierced with a fork but still have a slight bite.
Freshly squeezed lemon juice is highly recommended over bottled juice for the brightest, most vibrant flavour.
For an extra layer of flavour, add a minced clove of garlic to the butter and let it cook for 30 seconds before adding the lemon juice.
