Cheesy Beans & Sausage Toastie

Cheesy Beans & Sausage Toastie

This cheesy beans and sausage toastie turns store-cupboard favourites into a properly satisfying hot sandwich. Baked beans keep the filling saucy, Cheddar melts through the middle, and sliced cooked sausage makes it hearty enough for lunch.

Use a toastie maker if you have one, or press it in a frying pan until the bread is golden and the cheese has melted. Let the filling cool for a minute before eating as the beans will be very hot.

Method

  1. Heat the toastie maker, or put a frying pan over a medium heat.
  2. Butter one side of each slice of bread. Put one slice butter-side down on a board.
  3. Mix the beans with the Worcestershire sauce, if using, and a little black pepper. Spoon them onto the bread, leaving a small border.
  4. Scatter over the sliced sausage and grated Cheddar, then top with the second slice of bread, butter-side up.
  5. Cook in the toastie maker for 5–6 minutes, or press in the pan for 3 minutes on each side, until the bread is crisp and golden and the cheese has melted.
  6. Rest for 1 minute, then cut in half and serve while hot.
