Cheese & Onion Pie

A classic British comfort food, this Cheese & Onion Pie combines a flaky pastry crust with a rich and savoury filling of cheese and onions.

Perfect for family dinners with chips or vegetables.

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan) and grease a pie dish.
  2. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and line the pie dish, leaving some pastry for the top.
  3. In a large pan, melt the butter over medium heat and add the sliced onions. Cook until soft and golden brown.
  4. Stir in the flour and cook for a couple of minutes, then gradually add the milk, stirring continuously until the mixture thickens.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the grated cheddar cheese, allowing it to melt into the mixture. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Pour the cheese and onion filling into the pastry-lined pie dish.
  7. Cover with the remaining pastry, pressing the edges to seal, and cut a few slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
  8. Brush the top with beaten egg and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and crisp.
  9. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Ingredients

  • 2 Onion thinly sliced large
  • 1 Egg beaten (for glazing)
  • 30ml Plain Flour
  • 50g Butter
  • 300ml Milk

Notes

Prep all ingredients before you start for a smoother cook.

Taste and adjust seasoning near the end for balance.
