Apple & Date Turnover

Apple & Date Turnovers are crisp, golden pastries filled with tender apple and naturally sweet chopped dates.

A touch of cinnamon gives warmth, making them ideal for dessert, weekend baking or an afternoon treat.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C and line a tray with baking paper.
  2. Mix diced apple, chopped dates, brown sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice in a bowl.
  3. Cut the puff pastry into rectangles.
  4. Spoon the filling onto one half of each pastry piece, leaving a border.
  5. Fold over to seal, crimp the edges with a fork and cut a small steam slit on top.
  6. Brush with beaten egg.
  7. Bake for 18–20 minutes until puffed and golden.
  8. Cool slightly and dust with icing sugar if desired.

Ingredients

  • 1 Egg beaten for glazing
  • 120 g Dates chopped
  • 2 Apple peeled and finely diced
  • 2 tbsp Brown sugar
  • 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon
  • Icing Sugar optional, to serve
  • 320 g Puff Pastry ready-rolled
  • 1 tsp Lemon Juice

Notes

Chill assembled turnovers for 10 minutes before baking for cleaner layers.

Serve warm with custard, cream or yoghurt.
