Classic Beef and Mushroom Pie
A hearty classic beef and mushroom pie with flaky pastry and a deeply savoury filling.
Jansson’s Temptation is a traditional Swedish bake made with fine potato matchsticks, soft onions, and cream. The anchovy-style seasoning melts into the dish, creating a deeply savoury, comforting flavour.
As it bakes, the top turns golden while the centre stays creamy and rich. It is ideal for cosy dinners, festive tables, or as a warming side with roast meats.
Heat oven to 200°C (180°C fan) and butter a baking dish.
Slice potatoes into fine matchsticks and keep in cold water until needed.
Cook onions gently in butter until soft but not browned.
Layer half the potatoes in the dish, season lightly, then add onions and anchovy fillets.
Top with remaining potatoes and pour over cream and a splash of anchovy brine.
Scatter breadcrumbs and dot with extra butter.
Bake 45–55 minutes until deeply golden and bubbling at the edges.
Rest 10 minutes before serving so the layers settle.
