Classic Beef Pie with Buttery Puff Pastry

Classic Beef Pie with Buttery Puff Pastry

This classic beef pie is proper comfort food done the right way: savoury browned beef, softened onion and garlic, and a rich gravy-style filling tucked under buttery puff pastry. As it bakes, the top turns deeply golden and flaky while the filling stays juicy and full of flavour. It’s the kind of meal that feels both nostalgic and dependable, whether you serve it for a cosy family dinner or a relaxed weekend lunch.

The method is straightforward, the ingredients are easy to find, and the result is a hearty pie that pairs perfectly with creamy mash, steamed greens, or buttered peas. For best texture, let the filling cool slightly before adding the pastry lid, then glaze with beaten egg and cut a few vents to release steam. You’ll get a crisp top, a thick savoury centre, and a pie that slices and serves beautifully.

Method

  1. Heat oven to 200°C (180°C fan).
  2. Cook onion and garlic in oil, add meat and brown thoroughly.
  3. Add seasoning and liquid, then simmer until thick and rich. Cool slightly.
  4. Fill pastry, seal edges, glaze with egg and vent tops.
  5. Bake 25 to 35 minutes until deep golden and crisp.

Ingredients

  • Salt, to taste
  • 150 ml Stock
  • 2 cloves Garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp Tomato purée optional
  • Black Pepper, to taste
  • 1 medium Onions finely chopped
  • 1 Eggs beaten for glaze
  • 500 g Puff Pastry
  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 400 g Beef Mince or sausage meat

Notes

Let the filling cool slightly before topping with pastry to keep the layers flaky.

Cut a few small vents in the pastry so steam can escape and the top stays crisp.
